Tux Tuesday: Dr. Catsby Food Bowl for Whisker Relief

Have you heard of the condition called whisker fatigue, or whisker stress? I hadn’t, but I’ve sure experienced it and am so happy someone is doing something to help us cats! When cat’s ultra sensitive whiskers are forced into repeated close contact with tight spaces their experience can range from a daily nuisance to being extremely painful – ie, whisker fatigue. So many of the high-sided cat bowls out there can be harsh on whiskers, resulting in food left behind (but the cat is still hungry, and aggressive) or food being dropped and eaten off the floor to avoid the bowl.

Our friends at Dr. Catsby are working to solve this problem with a prototype bowl they have designed that features a gradually sloping shallow dish, making it easy for cats to access food without pulling back their whiskers. A small top lip keeps food from being pushed out, and the simple design also makes it easy to wash. To test their theory, they created a standard “control” bowl and placed both full of food in front of hungry cats. The results: cats overall preferred their Dr. Catsby bowl. Here’s a short (and hilarious) video outlining their design and tests:

A pledge of $20 will earn you a reward of the Dr. Catsby bowl in either stainless steel or food safe ABS plastic. Visit their Kickstarter site to donate and get more information about the bowls. They only have 3 days left on their campaign, let’s help them reach their goal!
